Goojje

A Google knock-off site called Goojje has appeared online in China since January 14, vying with Google while also pleading for it to stay in China.

The name of Goojje is a play on words in Chinese. While Goojje sounds like "elder sister", the word "Google" sounds like "elder brother" in Mandarin. Goojje has a message on its site which reads, "Sister was very happy when brother gave up the thought of leaving and stayed for his sister’s sake".

Goojje is a search engine and provides social networking services. Its homepage layout is similar to Google, while its logo looks like a combination of the world’s top Internet search engine and Baidu, the No. 1 search engine in China.

Goojie's search results appear to be filtered for sensitive content in accordance with Chinese regulations.

On January 12, Google said that hackers had tried to infiltrate its software coding and the e-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists, in a "highly sophisticated" attack.

Google has not yet commented about the Goojje site.
